Big in Japan, Alphaville

“Big in Japan” is a song by the German band Alphaville that was released in 1984 (they also wrote and performed another 80s hit, “Forever Young.”) The song is about a couple who is addicted to heroin and would like to get clean, however, they kid themselves by thinking that they are not all that bad, ergo, they are “big in Japan.” The idea of being big in Japan is that even though you are not doing well where you are at, you can always imagine a different place, situation, or world where you are respected, recognized, and successful.

Singer Marian Gold said this about the song: ‘“Big In Japan’ tells about a couple of lovers trying to get off Heroin. They both imagine how great it would be to love without the drug: no steal, no clients, no ice age in the pupil, real emotions, true worlds. (…) ‘Big in Japan’ meant so much as if you are nothing in your environs, you can be big somewhere else. You can be a king in another world. And if you aren’t that, you can tell it at home. Japan is so far away. Anyway, that statement fits perfectly with the story of a couple of lovers. So I used it for the refrain of the song.”
