I Melt With You, Modern English*

January 27, 2001 — Song #27

The song “I Melt With You” was released by the band Modern English in 1982 in the album After the Snow. Singer Robbie Grey says he wrote this song while going through an “economic downturn,” he said he had no money, the power had been cut off, and he was using candles. The idea for the song is that it would be set up in a world about to end because of a nuclear war. That is what the lyrics, “the world crashing all around your face” and “a pilgrimage to save this human’s race,” refer to. The “melting” was intended littleraly, Robbie Grey said: “I don’t think many people realized it was about a couple making love as the bomb dropped. As they made love, they become one and melt together.” Pretty dark. It is interesting how creativity sometimes arises in the most difficult moments of a person’s life. Here is the song:

And here are the lyrics:

Moving forward using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world thrashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace

I’ll stop the world and melt with you
You’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you

(You should know better)
Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(You should see why)
Dropped in the state of imaginary grace
(You should know better)
I made a pilgrimage to save this humans race
(You should see why)
What I’m comprehending a race that long gone bye

(I’ll stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you
(I’ll stop the world) you’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time
(Let’s stop the world) there’s nothing you and I won’t do
(Let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you

The future’s open wide

(Let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you
(Let’s stop the world) I’ve seen some changes but it’s getting better all the time
(Let’s stop the world) there’s nothing you and I won’t do
(Let’s stop the world) I’ll stop the world and melt with you

The future’s open wide

Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm

I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
You’ve seen the difference and it’s getting better all the time (let’s stop the world)
There’s nothing you and I won’t do (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)
I’ll stop the world and melt with you (let’s stop the world)

With the nuclear war interpretation, this seems like quite a bleak view on love — maybe it’s the drug that makes you think everything is ok even when the bomb is about to drop? Dark thoughts indeed.

Let’s stop the world and enjoy today, for all we know it may be all we have!
