Karma Chameleon, Culture Club

For 1983, I picked “Karma Chameleon” by Culture Club. The song was mostly written by Boy George. In an interview from The Billboard Book #1 Hits, Boy George said: “The song is about the terrible fear of alienation that people have, the fear of standing up for one thing. It’s about trying to suck up to everybody. Basically, if you aren’t true, if you don’t act like you feel, then you get Karma-justice, that’s nature’s way of paying you back.” It seems like at the time Boy George had a relationship with the group’s drummer, Jon Moss, who did not admit to the relationship. Those opening lines are a perfect depiction of that kind of relationship: “There’s a loving in your eyes all the way/If I listen to your lies, would you say/I’m a man (a man) without conviction/I’m a man (a man) who doesn’t know/How to sell (to sell) a contradiction/You come and go, you come and go.”

I love Boy George’s looks, in an interview with the band they say that they got popular in the USA before the audience knew what he looked like, and when they showed up in the USA everyone was shocked but they were so hooked on the music that they generally accepted them. Although they did give him a good deal of hassle, as you can see in this Letterman interview in 1983. I looked to see what Boy George is up to now and found out that he is a vegetarian, and very much into vegetarian cooking. You can see a video with Queen Latifah here preparing Zucchini Pesto Pasta, which looks delicious! Here is a super sweet acoustic version of Karma Chameleon:

And the regular video version followed by the lyrics:

There’s a loving in your eyes all the way
If I listen to your lies, would you say
I’m a man (a man) without conviction
I’m a man (a man) who doesn’t know
How to sell (to sell) a contradiction
You come and go, you come and go

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

Didn’t hear your wicked words every day
And you used to be so sweet I heard you say
That my love (my love) was an addiction
When we cling (we cling), our love is strong
When you go (you go), you’re gone forever
You string along, you string along

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

Every day is like survival (survival)
You’re my lover (my lover), not my rival
Every day is like survival (survival)
You’re my lover (my lover), not my rival

I’m a man (a man) without conviction
I’m a man (a man) who doesn’t know
How to sell (to sell) a contradiction
You come and go, you come and go

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
